Description

A gilded porcelain plate in the Museums collection, produced in 1881 by Minton & Co. of Staffordshire, displays typically eclectic nineteenth-century motifs. Among Victorian ceramic manufacturers, Minton was one of the largest and most trend-conscious; this plates stylized flowers and feathery leaves suggest decorative ornament from the East, while its swirling, asymmetrical composition looks ahead to Art Nouveau. Our ornate watch dial is adapted from this gilded English plate.

18K rose gold overlay case and link bracelet, made with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Quartz movement. Case: 1 1/2'' diam.; 7 1/2'' inner circumference (adjustable).

Art History

Many stylistic currents were fashionable in Europe during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Not only were different historical styles popular simultaneously, they sometimes appeared in a single work of art. The Renaissance continued to provide inspiration, but the period also witnessed the development of new artistic movements such as Arts and Crafts, which focused on fine workmanship and high-quality materials.
