Description

This tray showcases the limestone nose and lips of Akhenaten (ca. 1353–1336 B.C.) in The Met collection. Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) reigned as Egyptian pharaoh for 17 years during Dynasty 18, along with his famous queen, Nefertiti. He made radical changes in the official religion of Egypt, attacking the cults of the major gods and setting up instead the worship of Light, embodied by the sun disk Aten. In ancient Egyptian art he is often portrayed with slanting slit eyes, sensuous full lips, and a drooping chin.
