Description

Richly patterned with vines and leaves, our stylish bag takes its inspiration from an extraordinary American quilt (ca. 1875) in The Met collection, which was originally made by Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil (American, born Germany, 1828-1904). It bears the Tree of Life pattern, a popular bedcover design since the seventeenth century.

The first such bedcovers, called palampores, were from India and featured fantastic stylized trees. In Zaumseil's quilt, the foliage is more realistic than in the Indian versions. She seems to have traced actual leaves and vines for her appliquéd designs; the central "tree" is taken from grapevine leaves, and maple and beech leaves can also be clearly identified.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it, but some minor issues The Tree of Life bag works very well with the scarf, which I also bought. On the whole, I am happy with them both, but for a small person the bag is rather large, and the handles are not well positioned for the size/length -- they are too close together, which means the bag tends to collapse inwards when it is filled. Nonetheless, I'm glad I bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful bag! This is an object and beauty and function, and I couldn't be more pleased. There is enough room in this tote to accommodate a weekend wardrobe, several books, whatever you wish. It could also accommodate a laptop. The design on the outside is very appealing, and I've been pleased to receive several compliments on it. Because it can either be should beg or hand bag, it's fairly versatile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from More of an overnight bag than purse I really like this bag but I bought it because I thought it was purse sized. I will keep it because the design is just so gorgeous, but it's too large for everyday use... unless I guess if you have a massive laptop. But it's a beautiful bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love love love! This bag is perfect for so many things, from stashing a sweater and walking shoes that won’t fit in my computer bag during this changeable fall weather to loading up with books for a long weekend. The long handles are perfect to sling over a shoulder or hang on a chair back in a restaurant to keep it close and off the floor. So many compliments: WHERE CAN I GET THAT BAG? It even cheers me up when it’s just hanging in my entryway. I hesitated over the price, but well worth it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So Uncomfortable That the bag is pretty, I give you that. I thought it would make a great computer bag. But it is SO uncomfortable to schlep around. The strap is an awkward length, and it just doesn’t sit well. Plus, it is huge. All that fabric adds to the weight and bulkiness. I used it for about a week, and now it just sits there looking pretty.
