Description

Our spirited scarf celebrates an extraordinary American quilt (ca. 1875) in The Met collection, which was originally made by Ernestine Eberhardt Zaumseil (American, born Germany, 1828–1904). It bears the Tree of Life pattern, a popular bedcover design since the seventeenth century.

The first such bedcovers, called palampores, were from India and featured fantastic stylized trees. In Zaumseil's quilt, the foliage is more realistic than in the Indian versions. She seems to have traced actual leaves and vines for her appliquéd designs; the central "tree" is taken from grapevine leaves, and maple and beech leaves can also be clearly identified.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing Very disappointed. The scarf is thin and flimsy, "see-through", when I was expecting a warm shawl based on the way the model is wearing it, and the colors are subdued with a dull tea-stain colored background, compared with the bright colors on a clean cream in the catalog photo. I am returning it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super scraf and purchase A beautiful purchase - the pattern is all I expected - lively and easy on the eye. The feel of the fabric is perfect for three seasons of the year. I would further consider purchasing this scraf as a gift.
