Description

Edited by Adela Oppenheim, Dorothea Arnold, Dieter Arnold, and Kei Yamamoto

During Egypt’s great Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030–1650 B.C.), earlier artistic conventions, cultural principles, religious beliefs, and political systems were revived and reimagined. The Met’s sumptuous catalogue to the special exhibition presents a comprehensive picture of the art and culture of the Middle Kingdom, arguably the least known of Egypt’s three kingdoms and yet one that saw the creation of powerful, compelling works rendered with great subtlety and sensitivity. The book features nearly 300 works, including sculpture, relief decoration, stelae, jewelry, coffins, funerary objects, and personal possessions from the world’s leading collections of Egyptian art. Written by an international team of Egyptologists and Middle Kingdom specialists, the text provides recent scholarship and fresh insights, making it an authoritative resource.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Photos As Good As the Exhibit When I ordered this catalog in advance of seeing the exhibition, I deliberately kept it in the wrapper until after I view the exhibit. Sometimes, as with some drawings, and especially paintings, the catalog left me thinking that the photos were a good record of the exhibition, but were not the same to view as the real thing (up close). After viewing the exhibition, I opened the catalog and was very pleased with the way the photos really matched what I saw. (This may be due to sculptures and carvings lending themselves better to the camera than drawings and paintings though). I also was very impressed with the way the item description texts incorporated the description cards from the exhibition into the catalog descriptions along with additional background information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect !! The publications of the Met were always excellent !! And this case is not an exception. The Middle Kingdon in Ancient Egypt is a period less known than the other ones. For these reason, for the magnificent photos and for the high level of the scholars that wrote in it, it is a very important book. I am Professor in History and Egyptologist and I will certainly used it in my research and in my classes of egyptology. Again congratulations !!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I Have! I wouldn't have missed this book for the world. I did not see the exhibit but I wanted this book since it was but together by leading Egyptologists. I have also heard so much about your museum and your ancient Egyptian collection from Professor Bob Brier who recommends paying your museum a visit. This book is the next best thing to being there. Yay!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ancient Egypt Transformed: The Middle Kingdom I have been to many exhibitions and bought the exhibition catalogue afterwards. This time I decided to buy it and read it before I go and I made a wonderful discovery--this catalogue will absolutely enhance my experience when I go on Dec 26th. The book is beautiful, very well written among the various authors. I have many books on Ancient Egypt but am learning so much from this catalogue I hadn't quite put together. In addition, having the background on the 200+ items in the exhibit will make the viewing so much more interesting, satisfying as well as I will be able to remember so much more after I leave the exhibit and can go back to the catalogue if I want to. I am reading it from beginning to end before the exhibit, which is no mean feat but I am not regretting it even though it is over 300 pages long. This book will not just be one of your coffee table books. Its readable, personable and makes the people of the Middle Kingdom come alive because the archealogy of the Metropolitan Museum as well as many other teams has become so sophisticated and interested in all sorts of people from the era--not just the Pharoahs. Beautifully photographed and the pages are thick, creamy and the print is clear and beautifully set up. A treasure and if you buy it before you go to the exhibit, it can be delivered and you don't have to carry it home--as it is a heavy, substantial catalogue!
