The Met is home to a magnificent menagerie created by artists and artisans through the millennia and around the world. Our comfy kids' tee is inspired by a selection of awesome animals in the Museum's galleries: an ancient Egyptian statuette (332–30 B.C.) intended to contain a mummified cat; a shiny metal fish-shaped box, probably made in 19th-century India; a faience figure of a cynocephalus ape (664–380 B.C.) representing Thoth, the Egyptian god of writing, accounting, and all things intellectual; a guardian lion crafted in 11th–early 12th century Cambodia or Thailand; a bronze, lion-shaped incense burner (dated A.H. 577/ A.D. 1181–82) found in Iran; and a Classical Greek statue of a crouching lion (ca. 400–390 B.C.), which may have been used as a tomb monument or guardian.
