Description

This velvet pillow translates the Victorian tradition of the "lover's eye" into a charming accent for the contemporary home. This particular eye belonged to one Maria Miles Heyward, and was painted in watercolor on ivory by Edward Greene Malbone (American, 1777–1807) around 1802. The artist Emily Drayton Taylor (American, 1860–1952) had this work in her possession by way of the Heyward family, and she painted her own version circa 1930. Both Malbone's and Taylor's Eye of Maria Miles Heyward are now in The Met collection.
