Description

Our pin pays homage to the beauty, ferocity, and agility of the tiger, a captivating subject for so many artists and artisans throughout history. In Antoine-Louis Barye's (French, 1795–1875) Tiger (1810–75), a watercolor in The Met collection, an alert tiger meets our gaze with curiosity and caution. It's one of several similar studies by Barye in the Museum's holdings, though the French artist was perhaps best known for his animal sculptures. From the 1820s on, Barye would visit the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris—at times accompanied by his contemporary, the great Eugène Delacroix (French, 1798–1863)—seeking inspiration for his next masterpiece. Barye was a prolific watercolorist though he only made around 100 paintings, which he seems to have kept for himself.
