Description

Merced River, Yosemite Valley, 1866. Albert Bierstadt (American, 1830–1902). Oil on canvas.

Bierstadt immortalized the sublime landscapes of the American west during a cross-country trip with the journalist and explorer Fitz Hugh Ludlow. In 1863, he departed New York for an epic journey to California's Yosemite Valley. Bierstadt made many on-site studies, which he transformed into large-scale works back in his studio. Here, behemoth peaks tower over a group of tiny figures in the foreground, probably members of Yosemite's indigenous inhabitants.
