Collectible Art Ornaments from The Met

2026 Snowflake Ornament

The Met Store’s offering of collectible ornaments dates back over half a century to 1971, when our very first sterling silver snowflake ornament launched an annual holiday custom. This year, the detailing on our 2026 Snowflake Ornament comes from a horn, bone, and silk case in the Museum's holdings. Crafted in the 19th century, the original case is notable for its remarkable carvings in the medieval style.

The 2026 Snowflake Ornament comes in a Met Store gift box, complete with a silver cord for hanging.

2026 Star Ornament

Our latest collectible Star Ornament, a Met Store tradition since 1972, borrows its distinctive geometric design from the eight-pointed stars decorating the lid and base of a medieval Spanish box.

The Museum’s box boasts a striking octagonal shape and astounding marquetry—a technique mastered by woodworkers in the Islamic region of Spain known as al-Andalus of piecing different materials together to create a pattern. The band of linked, rotated squares on the sides of the lid resembles a marquetry pattern found in the late 12th- or early 13th-century Qasba Mosque in Marrakech, Morocco, suggesting a similar date range for the Museum's box. Our star likewise adapts the box's interlaced square and checkerboard motifs in homage to the elaborate detailing on this Andalusi treasure.

2026 Angel Tree Ornament

Each year, The Met Store transforms an ethereal angel figure from The Met’s European Sculpture and Decorative Arts collection into a new Angel Tree ornament. The 2026 Angel Tree Ornament celebrates this resplendent 18th-century Neapolitan angel.

The Met Store has presented ornaments recalling various Neapolitan angels in the Museum’s holdings since 2001 in homage to the Museum’s beloved annual Christmas Tree and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche. This popular Museum installation features an elaborate 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity scene at the base of the tree, with a host of exquisitely carved and dressed angels soaring in the branches above the Holy Family.

Our Angel Tree Ornament comes in a Met Store gift box with a gold ribbon for hanging.

Erté enjoyed a multifaceted career as a costume and set designer, and he’s especially renowned for the magazine covers he created for Harper's Bazaar between 1915 and 1936. The Met houses an important collection of Erté's original gouaches, which exemplify his unparalleled Art Deco designs. Presented each holiday season since 1997, our collectible shoe ornaments dress up any tree or elevate your living space year-round.

Questions

  • What are the best ornament gifts for art lovers?

The best ornament gifts for art lovers are designs connected to a favorite museum, art movement, material, motif, or collection object. Glass ornaments, sterling silver ornaments, handcrafted ornaments, and museum-inspired designs can all work well depending upon the recipient’s taste. For a more personal gift, choose an ornament that reflects what they already love, such as decorative arts, fashion, medieval design, architecture, nature, or a specific period in art history.
  • Why are collectible ornaments thoughtful gifts for art lovers?

Collectible ornaments are thoughtful gifts for art lovers because they are small, personal, and easy to display every year. A museum-inspired ornament can reflect the recipient’s aesthetic interests while also becoming part of their holiday story. Unlike a gift that is used once and forgotten, an ornament returns with each holiday season, reminding the recipient of the giver, the artwork, and the tradition behind it.
  • How can I turn ornaments into a yearly gift tradition?

To turn ornaments into a yearly gift tradition, choose a repeatable theme that makes each year’s gift feel connected. You might give one museum-inspired ornament every December, select a different material each year, or choose designs tied to the recipient’s favorite motifs. Adding a handwritten note with the year and reason for the selection can make the gift feel more personal and help the collection tell a story over time.
