Egyptian Art at The Met

The deities of ancient Egypt were depicted in a multitude of forms that reflected their diverse roles within myth and religious beliefs. Illustrations of gods weren’t just images—they brought the gods to life. Through their portrayals in tombs, temples, and shrines, it was thought that deities could enter sacred spaces and become active participants in rituals, offering a vital connection between the human and divine worlds. Over Egypt’s long history, its belief system grew to include more than 1,500 gods with many overlapping forms and traits. Subtle visual cues like what a figure wore, how they posed, or the symbols they carried helped identify them and their roles.

Divine Egypt, an exhibition on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from October 12, 2025, through January 19, 2026, brings together almost 250 works of art and objects to examine the imagery associated with the most important deities in ancient Egypt’s massive body of gods.

An Art Coloring Book Inspired by The Met

In celebration of this remarkable showcase, The Met Store collaborated with the Museum’s Department of Egyptian Art to develop a coloring book featuring original drawings of deities, each accompanied by hieroglyphs detailing their names and important epithets. The drawings were made by draftsperson and excavation artist Sara Chen, and the texts were arranged by Brendan Hainline, a researcher with expertise in Egyptian language and religion.

The idea to present an exclusive Met coloring book alongside Divine Egypt came out of a meeting between The Met Store and the Egyptian Art department. The discussion began with proposals for tried and true exhibition-related items such as a tote, but a holiday card based on Chen’s illustrations charmed our designers, who were thrilled to learn that she was working on some 50 original line drawings for Divine Egypt and its concurrent exhibition catalogue

An early iteration of the Divine Egypt Coloring Book in progress

The Met Store team chose 20 of their favorites for what would become the Divine Egypt Coloring Book, including depictions of Thoth, "Lord of Hieroglyphs"; Hathor, "Lady of the Sky"; and Osiris, "Lord of Eternity." In addition to the deities themselves, the illustrations of the hieroglyphs are so detailed that they can also be colored in, adding another layer of play to this fun and enriching activity book. Plus, the padded format means each page can be removed and displayed upon completion.
