Description

A pair of elegant cranes—the Japanese symbol for longevity—soar across a luminous moon in a dusky blue sky. This serene detail embroidered on our napkins is borrowed from a 19th-century earthenware tile in The Met collection, designed by Christopher Dresser (British, 1834–1904) for Minton Ceramic Factory (British, 1793–present). Though none of the pieces made by Minton bear Dresser's signature, this tile can be firmly identified as his design based on drawings in the company archives. The composition directly references a Japanese ceramic flowerpot (ca. 1860) exhibited at the 1862 International Exhibition in London, and later acquired by what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum.
