Blue & White Stylized Birds Oversize Scarf
The stylized birds and flowers on our luxurious scarf come from a blue-resist curtain panel, probably created in America around 1725–75, and now in The Met collection. Typically crafted by applying a dye-resistant substance such as wax to a pattern on a piece of cloth which was then dipped in an indigo bath, the origins of blue-resist fabrics have long bewildered scholars. Once thought to be the earliest American-made printed textiles, they were more likely commissioned from Indian artisans by the East India Company and exported to the colonies, where they were made into bed hangings, quilts, and curtains.
