Luca Signorelli (Italian, active by 1470–died 1523) painted Madonna and Child around 1505–07 and gave it to his daughter in 1507, possibly as a gift to mark the birth of a child. The painting, now in The Met collection, features a half-length image of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus seated on her lap against an elaborate gold background.
Decorated with grotesque ornamentation, putti, and Roman coins or medals, the background exemplifies Signorelli's interest in antiquarian motifs. We’ve replicated one of the encircled putti seen in the painting’s background for our bangle.
