Description

By Robert McCarter
Foreword by Thomas P. Campbell

The complete monograph on Marcel Breuer (Hungarian, 1902–1981), this new volume details the life and work of the last of the first generation of Modernist architects. Illustrated with never-before-seen material, it presents an account of his entire career, from his beginnings at the Bauhaus in prewar Germany through his collaboration with Walter Gropius and the establishment of his own practice in the United States.

In addition to discussing Breuer's principles and design theories, it is the only book to feature all of the architect's buildings, including the UNESCO headquarters in Paris and the Whitney Museum of American Art [now The Met Breuer] in New York, as well as his iconic furniture, such as the Wassily and Cesca chairs.

With a special foreword by Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this essential monograph is a must-have addition to every library of art, architecture, design, or Modernism.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent and comprehensive book on Breuer I needed a book on Breuer listing all of his projects and dating them. This book did exactly that. As well as being a beautiful publication, it also has excellent essays on the background of Breuer's work. The photos are taken from vantage points that explain the planning of the houses and there are additional photos of original drawings. The same attention to detail and photography applies to Breuer's furniture. I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone with an architectural library.
