Description

A New York City souvenir inspired by The Met collection.

This artful bookmark pays tribute to the Bryant Vase, a grand commemorative vessel produced by Tiffany & Co. in celebration of the poet and newspaper editor William Cullen Bryant (American, 1794–1878) on his 80th birthday. The Bryant Vase was commissioned by a group of his friends to "embody…the lessons of [his] literary and civic career." With James Horton Whitehouse (American, 1833–1902) at the helm, its design, combining Renaissance Revival sensibilities with those of the Aesthetic movement, consists of a Greek vase form ornamented with symbolic imagery and motifs. The fretwork of American flora covering the body of the vase, including apple branches and blossoms, represents the beauty and wholesome quality of Bryant's poetry, while the scenes in the oval medallions—made by the esteemed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, 1848–1907)—allude to his life and works. After the acclaimed vase was presented to Bryant in 1876, Tiffany & Co. displayed it at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The following year, it became the first acquisition of American silver to enter The Met collection.

We present this item in celebration of Collecting Inspiration: Edward C. Moore at Tiffany & Co. On view at The Met Fifth Avenue from June 9 to October 20, 2024, this exhibition showcases the profound design influence of Edward C. Moore (1827–1891), a prodigious collector of decorative arts, a noted silversmith, and the creative force who led Tiffany & Co. to unparalleled heights of originality and success during the second half of the 19th century. Through over 180 extraordinary creations bequeathed to the Museum from Moore's collection, alongside 70 magnificent silver objects designed at Tiffany & Co. under his direction, Collecting Inspiration considers Moore's pivotal role in shaping the legendary Tiffany design aesthetic—and the evolution of The Met collection.
