Description

By Andrew Bolton, with Karen Van Godtsenhoven and Amanda Garfinkel

Introduction by Fabio Cleto

Although an elusive concept, "camp" can be found in most forms of artistic expression, revealing itself to be a complex aesthetic that challenges the status quo. As an expression of the playful dynamics between high art and popular culture, fashion both embraces and flaunts such camp modes as irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration. Drawing from Susan Sontag's seminal 1964 essay "Notes on 'Camp'," this multifaceted publication presents the sartorial manifestations of the camp sensibility while contributing new theoretical and conceptual insights to the camp canon through texts and images. Stunning new photography by Johnny Dufort highlights works by exceptional fashion designers including Thom Browne, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, Alessandro Michele, Franco Moschino, Yves Saint Laurent, Jeremy Scott, Anna Sui, Gianni Versace, and Vivienne Westwood.

Andrew Bolton is Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Editorial Reviews

"Featuring about 200 objects, both fine art and fashion, Camp: Notes on Fashion will trace the origins of the subject from the 17th century, specifically the court of Versailles, to the present day, when disruption and duplicity are the common currency."
      —Laird Borrelli-Persson, Vogue

"[An] amazing catalogue . . . extraordinary."
      —Christiane Amanpour, CNN

"The catalog is divided into two discrete, mint-colored books, both of which are strapped into a handsome pink leather-bound case. The design is pure confection."
—Alex Weintraub, Los Angeles Review of Books

"a thumb-through of the show's lavish if cumbersome catalog excited me."
      —Roberta Smith, New York Times

"…wondrously discursive main essay…"
      —Andy Battaglia, ArtNews

"Befitting the giddy opulence of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ [...] this catalogue is a haute objet unto itself."
      —Jennifer Krasinski, Bookforum

"Opulent [...] extravagant [...] will escort you into a world of haute couture's most extravagant side [...] an extraordinary illuminating theoretical examination of camp."
      —Do You Read Me?!

"Provides a rigorous overview of camp's etymological and phenomenological origins [...] not only an exquisitely entertaining read, but also a collectable objet d'art that will give a sprinkling of camp to even the squarest of coffee tables."
      —Kitty Grady, Financial Times

"…thorough catalogue essay…"
      —David D'Arcy, Observer

"…beautiful—and quite campy in its own right…"
      —Steff Yokta, Vogue

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and unique I love this book, so beautifully bound. I've always been aware of camp and what it is, but this is the first time I've read an academic and artistic study on the subject. I adored the exhibit and had to buy the catalogue. The book is a fantastic addition to my library. I read it in one sitting. Fascinating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Tome! I guess you might call this an "exhibit catalog," but I call it a Terrific Tome! I love everything about this publication. The size, the format, the color, title, and of course, its contents! It's been a "several sits with several cups of hot tea" worth read! Thank you for putting together exhibits such as this and thank you for their fabulous coordinating publications!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great reminder of a fabulous exhibit I bought this book as a surprise for my artist cousin who saw the exhibit as well. She was absolutely thrilled. As with most such books there were a few images I would have liked to have seen but they weren’t included. In general though it’s a good primer on the things in the exhibit and on the philosophy behind it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cam Notes on fashion! I think the overall layout of the book is amazing, it was like a guide before the exhibit since I got it weeks before arriving to NY. I have a nice fashion library and this one is the new kid on the block.
