Description

Simple yet detailed, this elegant hairpin is the result of a collaboration between Brooklyn-based design studio Callidus Guild and Aesa jewelry of New York City. Their playful and spontaneous jewelry utilizes the traditional Japanese technique of yakisugi, a method that uses fire to char and naturally finish wood. Through recurring motions of mixing, hammering, blending, heating, tooling, and burnishing, the natural materials are reconfigured. This creative alliance took direct inspiration from visits to The Met, informing this rare collection of gold, bronze, and wooden jewels.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not actually meant to be worn in hair I bought two, even at this unreasonable price (roughly 2x normal cost for hairsticks when the discount was applied), because they were so pretty and different from my other hair sticks. I wore them three times and one snapped on insertion. I've never broken another wooden hair stick this way (I'm not rough with them). Perhaps it's the type of wood or the process that darkens them or a combination. It's not formed correctly to even be repurposed as a shawl pin.
