By Diana Craig Patch

The cultural icons of Pharaonic Egypt, from the Great Sphinx at Giza to the famous burial of Tutankhamun, are among the world's most renowned works of art. Less well known, but equally impressive, are the rare and ancient images of people, animals, and landscapes made by the Egyptians who lived prior to the age of the pharaohs, when the formal conventions of Egyptian art had not yet fully evolved. With illustrations of more than 180 objects created from about 4400 to 2649 BC, Dawn of Egyptian Art presents the art forms and iconography in which the early Egyptians recorded their beliefs about the land where they lived, the yearly events that took place there, and what they thought was important to the eternal survival of their world. Comprehensive texts explore the origins and early development of the culture of ancient Egypt while discussing the relationship between image and writing as well as the representation of the self and the universe.

Editorial Reviews

"this richly illustrated (246 illustrations, 234 in full color) and deeply researched volume features contributions by experts whose combined efforts meet the publication's stated purpose, "to examine and reflect upon the finest representations created by the early Egyptians and to investigate why these objects were made.Patch (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and colleagues have produced an engaging, readable scholarly catalogue that laypersons and academics alike will welcome the work goes beyond description to include up-to-date analysis and reflection on objects' functions within the wider framework of early society and state formation in Egypt."
Choice

"Through essays contributed by curators, conservators, professors, archeologists, and scholars, and with illustrations of the exhibition's lovely objects, Patch has assembled a rich catalog with lavish illustrations, accessible text, and useful notes, this catalog is appropriate for interested general readers and scholars."
Library Journal

"one of the most impressive publications on early Egyptian art I have seen. Beautifully illustrated with over 180 photographs of objects from the exhibition and with an eye-catching cover looks and feels like a coffee table book but the text is both readable and highly informative"
Ancient Egypt Magazine

"if one isn't able to visit the Metropolitan Museum in New York City and witness "Dawn of Egyptian Art" firsthand—and especially if one is taken by the stunning simplicity of Predynastic and Early Dynastic arts and crafts in Ancient Egypt—Dawn of Egyptian Art is a wonderful substitute: the beautiful color photographs (many of them full page) of more than 180 objects in the exhibition alone justify adding it to any Egyptological library. But Dawn is also, arguably, one of the best scholarly treatments to date of the artistic expression during the formative period of Egyptian civilization. There are run of the mill exhibition catalogues, and then there are must-own volumes like this one!"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully Illustrated and Comprehensive My thanks to Diana Craig Patch for putting together this wonderful book full of the gorgeous artwork and funerary objects of the early Egyptian dynasties. Within, is showcased art of such profound beauty and sophistication, later ages would wait millennia to capture their essence, as on page 102 which statue rival those of the very finest modern abstract sculptors. The sheer scope of inclusion, and speculation as to meaning behind these ancient relics is truly helpful. I haven't finished reading this book yet, but I can tell it is an invaluable book to own and a great addition to my library.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overly scholarly I hoped this would give me some background information on what I would see on an upcoming trip to Egypt, but it told me more than i needed to know about things I didn't get to see
