Description

This unique glass tray with metallic details complements the exhibition Making Marvels: Science and Splendor at the Courts of Europe at The Met Fifth Avenue. On view in the show, this fantastic beast comes from a famous 1515 woodblock print in The Met collection by Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471–1528).

The woodcut portrays an Indian rhinoceros that was given to King Manuel I of Portugal as a gift; in Lisbon, the exotic animal caused a sensation. Dürer never saw the actual rhino, but created this strange, imaginary creature from written descriptions and a brief sketch. Thousands of these rhino prints were sold in Dürer's lifetime.
