Description

This imposing piece is based on an Early Renaissance ring in The Met collection, which was made in Rome, Italy, about 1464– 71. Crafted in gilt brass and blue glass, the original is engraved with royal French lilies and the name of Pope Paul II, who was pope during this time.

Though there are as many as 100 rings with the names of Early Renaissance popes in European museums, this was the first example to come to The Met. Such impressive rings were not worn by the popes themselves but served as symbols of papal authority and may have had a ceremonial function.

The superb ring is the work of Donna Distefano, a master goldsmith who looks to Renaissance paintings, literary sources, and ancient techniques as she handcrafts finely wrought pieces in her New York City atelier. A favorite of rock stars and high-society clients alike, Distefano bridges the divide between classical refinement and contemporary appeal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Important ring I saw this in the MET's gift shop and asked to see it. It is such an impressive ring. There is so much detail on the corners of the ring and I the base too. One can tell there is a story being told through this ring with all the symbolism. It has a nice weight to it. It definitely has a high quality feel.
