During the Renaissance, collectors' taste for bronze statuettes and portrait medals coincided with an interest in classical antiquity. Our earrings were inspired by a bronze portrait medal in The Met collection that shows Isabella di Capua in profile wearing a large pendant earring. The medal, by artist Jacopo Nizolla da Trezzo (Italian, 1515/19–1589), was cast about 1546–55.
Isabella di Capua was princess of Molfetta in southern Italy. This signed medal was probably commissioned by her husband Ferrante Gonzaga, who served as a general to Emperor Charles V during her residence in Milan.
