Description

Description

The advent of paste jewelry took the aristocracy by storm in 18th-century Europe. Developed in 1724 by Georges Frdric Strass, an Alsatian jeweler, paste was a form of leaded glass, which was cut and polished to resemble diamonds. Named jeweler to the French king in 1734, Strass was also credited with the creation of the strass or rhinestone.

The invention of paste, which shimmered like diamonds in candlelight, was popular at the court of Louis XV and soon spread throughout Europe. Our jewelry was developed from a pair of mid- 18th-century paste earrings in The Costume Institute collection.
