Description

The Rinpa school, a major center of Japanese painting during the Edo period (1615–1868), saw a revival in the early 19th century, thanks to the work of Sakai Hōitsu (Japanese, 1761–1828). Born into a wealthy family that had once patronized Ogata Korin (Japanese, 1658–1716), Hōitsu studied Korin's works yet focused on natural images rather than scenes from classical literature.

In The Persimmon Tree (1816), a two-panel folding screen, Hōitsu pairs the mottled-ink or tarashikomi technique of the Rinpa school with his interest in Western-style realism. Our pin is adapted from this exquisite work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pin I have been wearing the MET holly pin during December for the past couple of years. I like it so much that I wanted something similar for other fall and winter months. The persimmon pin is perfect.
