The elegant feline on this stylish oversize tee pays homage to an ancient Egyptian statuette of a cat (332–30 BCE) in the Museum's collection. The cat was the sacred animal of the goddess Bastet, a great and benevolent deity who could be pacified by rituals. Her lioness counterpart, Sakhmet, represented dangerous, potentially destructive forces. Cats were first domesticated by the Egyptians in the Middle Kingdom for their mouse-hunting abilities. By the New Kingdom, they had also become household companions.
