Egyptian Multistrand Necklace
Size Information
Designed to be looped around the neck, this opulent, extra-long necklace recalls a rare ancient Egyptian bracelet in The Met collection. The original piece (Dynasty 12, ca. 1950–1900 B.C.) was made during the Middle Kingdom.
In ancient Egypt, such adornments not only beautified the wearer but also served as amulets, protecting their owners from harm. Finely worked pieces of jewelry were placed in the tombs of the royal family and high-ranking officials.
The bracelet, found with the mummy of Satsebek during the Museum's 1921–22 excavations at Lisht, showcases tubular beads in rich green and turquoise hues that were favored by the Egyptians.
