Description

This unique reproduction is based on an ancient Egyptian faience mask in The Met collection, which dates to the second century A.D., when Egypt was under Roman rule. The face refers to Dionysus, Greek patron of the theater and god of rebirth; in Egypt he was equated with Osiris.

The original mask is too small and brittle to have served as an actual theater mask; such Egyptian faience examples are known only from burials, as offerings to Osiris/Dionysus. But it recalls previous centuries when nearly every ancient Greek and Roman city of note had an open-air theater. By the fifth century B.C., theatrical masks had developed as standard types, recognizable immediately to the audience when the actors wearing them came onstage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent piece The color is so beautiful, even better than the picture. I used a guerrilla hook so as to not leave a big hole. Easier to hang as well.
