Description

Our pair of dramatic masks is based on two ancient Egyptian faience masks in The Met collection, which date to the second century A.D., when Egypt was under Roman rule. Both faces refer to Dionysus, Greek patron of the theater and god of rebirth; in Egypt he was equated with Osiris.

The original masks are too small and brittle to have served as actual theater masks; such Egyptian faience examples are known only from burials, as offerings to Osiris/Dionysus. But they recall previous centuries when nearly every ancient Greek and Roman city of note had an open-air theater. By the fifth century B.C., theatrical masks had developed as standard types, recognizable immediately to the audience when the actors wearing them came onstage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning! These exceeded my expectations! The ceramic is substantial, the glaze rich and thick, and the detailing is fine. They make a strong impression when hung together. I am very pleased.
