Description

This striking reproduction was modeled on a bronze cista (Etruscan, 4th century B.C.), or covered box, in The Met Collection, a characteristic Etruscan form. This nude youth, doing an arching back-bend, makes a perfect handle for the cista lid. Such attachments were skillfully composed to fit their purpose, and can stand alone as works of art.

Etruscan civilization, established in the region of Italy now known as Tuscany, reached the height of its power during the seventh and sixth centuries B.C. Although the Etruscans spoke and wrote their own language, they left behind no comprehensive written history, and much of what is known about them comes from the remains of their material culture that were preserved in tombs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected from the MET This item was available, a long time ago, in pewter and it was amazing! I lost the one I bought to a girlfriend. I was glad when the MET offered this one. It is not the same, unfortunately. It looks and feels like plastic. I am disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Reproduction I just received the sculpture and its features and measurements are exact to the description. Nicely defined replica to the original handle in the Etruscan exhibit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Etruscan charm This is a very small piece, one of many reproductions from classical antiquity that I've purchased from the Met, the BM, the Louvre, the KH... In spite of its size, it has great energy and vitality, and would serve admirably as a decorative paperweight. Unlike other reproductions I've received from the Met, however, this one is not perfect, as there are flecks of the material from which it was cast on the upper back which, while not immediately evident, can be certainly be felt when the statue is handled; nor could they easily be removed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Should be larger. This object makes a great gift for someone who takes yoga seriously, which is what it was used as, a gift. It should be made somewhat larger so that, visually, it could be appreciated more if it were.
