The imposing head on this tee belongs to the Greek hero, Herakles, who's depicted in a state of exhaustion after completing his legendary 12 labors. Assigned to him by Eurystheus, ruler of the Argolid, these labors were his punishment for murdering his wife and children under the influence of a spell cast by his vengeful stepmother, Hera. This sculpted likeness in The Met collection is a 1st-century A.D. Roman copy of an older Greek statue attributed to Lysippos and dated to the second half of the 4th century B.C.
