Description

A beautiful wool shawl in the Museum's collection was produced in France in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The flowers on this shawl have a painterly quality that is particular to nineteenth-century French weaving, yet the design is reminiscent of Russian embroidery, making it likely that this shawl was woven in France for the Russian market. Our reversible adaptation is based on this fascinating, cross-cultural example of the textile-maker's art.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful scarf but lacks in long-lasting quality I have had this scarf for 5 months and at first it was utterly beautiful. Quickly though, it began to pile much like how a cheap sweater does. The once soft exterior became full of little balls which resulted in me not being able to wear it anymore. I only had it dried cleaned once, so I took careful care to keep its condition in check. For the price and the legacy of the met shop, I bought this with the intention that it would last more than a year. Although beautiful in the box, it quickly wears out and is unusable. If I had known this, I surely would not have bought it. The color is very rich though, so if you are looking to not heavily wear it then toss your coins in and purchase it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A beautiful shawl but it wrinkles The color and design are beautiful, and the large size is just right. It has one major flaw. Because of the large amount of cotton in the fabric it wrinkles quite badly, as all wool or wool/silk would not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Wearable This is my second shawl purchased from the Met. It is utterly gorgeous and the colour is bang on. I hesitated in purchasing it, as I wasn't sure if the red was an orangey red...but it isn't and it's very glamorous to wear. Had a bit of an issue with shipping costs at my end, as it was coming across the border into Canada, but the Met handled it beautifully and solved the issue immediately. Thank you Met, I'm looking forward to getting a third shawl from you. They feel special, coming from the Met.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Scarf, Truly, but the Static!! Just received this beautiful scarf- it is quite the looker. Due to the harsh climate I live in, it keeps sparking! This may be due to the cotton/silk combo, but it is so nice to the touch. I must keep it and live through the static. Wish it was wool so it was a little warmer as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Double duty I recently purchased this lovely light-weight reversible shawl on sale. It's red on one side and black on the other. It looks equally good worn with a dress and heals or leggings and boots and blends with grays, reds, black and taupe. Even though it is light-weight it is warm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful accessory Bought this as a Christmas gift for my daughter and we both love it. The colors are so lovely, much more vibrant than the catalogue. The weight makes it perfect to wear as a scarf with a winter coat or alone as a wrap for spring or fall.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nostalgia I bought this for a gift, for my daughter-in-law. She loved it, said her grandmother lived down the street from Met Museum and would bring her gifts from there when she was a child. It brought back good memories.
