French Amor Hoop Earrings
Our pearl-laden hoop earrings, embellished with delicate letters spelling "amor," reinterpret a mid-15th–century French cluster jewel at The Met. Made of gold, pearl, and emerald with the Latin word for "love" suspended along the base, the original adornment in the Museum's holdings may have been worn as either a pendant or a brooch. Some portraits of young women also depict similar pieces exhibited in their hair, or at the shoulder or neck. Such luxurious creations played an important role in betrothal and marriage, serving as magnificent tokens of affection.Â
