Description

Like the sensational Virginia Oldoini, whose piercing stare endures in Pierre-Louis Pierson's (French, 1822–1913) beguiling gelatin silver print, peer through squeaky-clean camera and eyeglass lenses with our microfiber cloth featuring a detail from Scherzo di Follia (1861–67, printed ca. 1930) in The Met collection.

Oldoini, the Countess Verasis de Castiglione, was sent to Paris in 1855 with a mission from an Italian statesman: she was to covertly win Napoleon III over to the cause of Italian unity by "any means she chose." Wielding her irresistible wiles, she promptly became the emperor's mistress. Though she was notably reclusive after the fall of the Second Empire in 1870, the raging narcissism she boasted in her heyday was perfectly suited to photography. Pierson produced over 700 images of Oldoini, allowing her to direct every aspect of her own portrayal and promotion.
