Description

Holding a bough of lilies, symbolizing purity, an ethereal archangel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary with news that she's to bear the son of God. The divine scene on our disc ornament comes from Luca Giordano's (Italian, 1634–1705) The Annunciation (1672) in The Met collection. The Neapolitan artist painted this altarpiece after a trip to Venice; as such, it's a clear homage to the Venetian visionary, Titian. Giordano was the leading painter in Naples by the late 17th century, and was often inspired by Renaissance virtuosi.
