Description

This wood lacquer ornament showcases a loving detail from Francesco Granacci's (Francesco di Andrea di Marco) (Italian, 1469–1543) Madonna and Child (ca. 1520) in The Met collection. The composition appears to have been inspired by a sculpture in low relief—most likely by either Donatello or Michelangelo, with whom Granacci was a fellow pupil in the workshop of Ghirlandaio—but the artist has augmented the picture by depicting both figures bathed in natural light.
