Greek Owl Pewter Ornament
Art ornaments make perfect Met Museum souvenirs.
This handmade pewter ornament from the Rhode Island–based studio Beehive Handmade reimagines the alert owl on a Greek terracotta skyphos—a type of deep drinking cup—in The Met collection. The owl was the goddess Athena's animal attribute, and therefore figures prominently on Athenian coinage as well as a large group of 5th-century vases such as this one. Established in 1999 to continue the 20th-century American Studio Craft Movement, Beehive is a collective of American artists who make thoughtfully designed heirlooms.
