Description

Between 1880 and 1904, the artist and natural history devotee Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819–1904) contributed over 100 letters and articles on hummingbirds and related topics to the American magazine Forest and Stream. The bird represented in his Hummingbird and Passionflowers (ca. 1875–85) is the black-eared fairy (Heliothryx aurita), whose habitat is the lowlands of the Amazon basin, as is the passionflower (Passiflora racemosa).
