Description

Since the 18th century, the British city of Stoke-on-Trent has been a hub for the manufacture of ceramics. Rich in clay, salt and lead for glazing, and coal for the kilns, the land lent itself to the medium, and played a pivotal role in its evolution into a factory-based industry. The blue-and-white plate (ca. 1824–ca. 1828) informing the motif on our salad plate set was produced by Henshall, Williamson & Co. (British, ca. 1802–28). Made for the American market, the earthenware plate in The Met collection offers an idyllic vista of the Dam and Water Works in Philadelphia, bordered by a lush motif of flowers and fruit.
