Hassam: Celia Thaxter's Garden, Isles of Shoals, Maine Framed Print
Celia Thaxter's Garden, Isles of Shoals, Maine, 1890. Childe Hassam (American, 1859–1935). Oil on canvas.
The American Impressionist Childe Hassam painted this breezy summer scene as part of a series depicting the lush wildflower garden cultivated by his friend, the poet Celia Thaxter. Thaxter lived on Appledore Island, one of the Isles of Shoals, located some 10 miles east of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The poppies depicted front and center provide a striking color contrast to Babb's Rock, pictured in the background.
