Pissarro: The Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning Framed Print
The Boulevard Montmartre on a Winter Morning, 1897. Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903). Oil on canvas.
Following a six-year stint in the rural commune of Éragny, Pissarro returned to Paris and painted several series of the city's lively streets. In the winter of 1897, the artist captured the famous Boulevard Montmartre from the heights of the Grand H ôtel de Russie where he temporarily lived. His room looked straight down the boulevard, which allowed him to observe the horses, carriages, and people from a privileged bird's-eye view.
