Iberian Vines Embroidered Scarf
An art scarf inspired by The Met collection.
A late 16th–early 17th-century table cover in The Met's European Sculpture and Decorative Arts collection is translated into this elegant embroidered scarf. The original textile, made in Spain or Portugal, boasts a decorative format that may have originated in Islamic Spain: hummingbirds hover amid carnations and irises blooming from Renaissance-style scrolling vines. The golden embroidery on our interpretation pays homage to the color of the Museum's table cover. Produced from a local plant known as weld, the resplendent yellow dye—favored for its richness and durability—was a popular choice for Iberian textiles.
