Description

Neoclassical painter Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, 1780–1867) has long been celebrated for his sublime portraits immortalizing many of the leading personalities of his day. This splendid painting (1851–53) of Joséphine-Eléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn (1825–1860), the Princesse de Broglie, was his last commissioned portrait of a female sitter. Renowned for her great beauty and shy reserve, the princess traveled in the most cultivated circles of Second Empire France (1852–70) under Napoleon III.
