Iranian Flora and Fauna Small Vase
Swooping birds, leaping fauna, and reaching foliage decorate a large blue-glazed jar (dated A.H. 681/A.D. 1282–83) in The Met collection. Scholars have identified a similarity between the ornamentation on this Iranian vessel and the designs on Chinese silk tapestries concurrently traded along the Silk Road. The jar likewise bears verses that suggest it may have been used to store a beverage such as wine: "Tumultuous air and boiling earth; Joyous is he whose heart is happy. Drink!" We've translated this remarkable object into an elegant vase for the contemporary home.
