Description

This elegant scarf reimagines Kamisaka Sekka's (Japanese, 1866–1942) A Thousand Butterflies (1904), a set of two woodblock-printed books in The Met collection. Although the artist was trained in traditional Japanese painting styles—particularly those of the Rinpa School, which sought to revive Japanese visual traditions—his work bears whispers of western influence, particularly that of Art Nouveau, the result of government-sponsored trips to Paris and Glasgow.
