Japanese Chrysanthemums Sheer Poncho
Our graceful poncho design is based on a striking twentieth-century stencil (made after 1922) in the Museum's collection, which features a graphic pattern of a fence with chrysanthemums. In the Edo period (1615–1868) and even into the early twentieth century, such stencil-patterned textiles became increasingly elaborate and costly. While the stencils and the skilled craftsmen who created them produced exquisite results on fabric, the stencils are works of art in their own right, often showing breathtaking intricacy.
