The Waterfall Where Yoshitsune Washed His Horse at Yoshino in Yamato Province, in The Met collection, is from the series A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces by the great printmaker Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese, 1760–1849). Yoshitsune was a legendary 12th-century samurai known for his bravery and benevolence. Colorful woodblock prints of the Edo period, such as this one, featured popular scenes that appealed to wealthy townspeople.
