Description

This elegant bowl takes its inspiration from the stylized waves that decorate a 19th-century Japanese stencil in The Met collection, which is made of paper reinforced with silk. Such hand-cut stencil paper, known as katagami, was used to make patterns for resist-dyeing of kimonos and other textiles.

While these stencils and the skilled craftsmen who created them produced exquisite results on fabric, the stencils can be considered works of art in their own right, often showing breathtaking intricacy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and Elegant I bought this for my sister. She and I both thought this wave bowl was exceptionally elegant. It is minimal, spare, and textural in presentation. It's so lovely!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful customer service I bought this bowl as a Christmas gift, and it arrived broken. I was worried as to what I was going to get as a gift now that I thought it was too late to get a replacement. The representative not only shipped me a new one, but sent it at a quicker shipping method, so I was able to give it as a gift. I can not say enough good things about the quality of both the piece and the service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So beautiful! Not only was this an ideal gift, but the story in the catalogue telling of the references to Orchid Pavilion Gathering helped me find some inspiring texts to accompany the gift. I would have liked to see the original stencil that inspired the pattern, but could not find it online. Very satisfying.
