Our bold necklace takes its design from a Precolumbian gold ornament in The Met collection. This intriguing object was originally made in Panama sometime between the 11th and the 16th century.
In the early 1500s, when Christopher Columbus sailed along the Caribbean coast of present-day Costa Rica and Panama, he reported seeing people wearing "mirrors" around their necks. It is possible he was referring to such gold discs reflecting the sunlight like mirrors.
