Description

Description

Etruscan civilization, centered in the region of Italy now known as Tuscany, flourished between the 7th and 4th centuries B.C. The wealthy, cosmopolitan, and luxury-loving Etruscans developed some of the finest gold, silver, and bronze jewelry of the ancient world. Although the basic jewelry-making techniques were first discovered by Near Eastern metalsmiths, the Etruscans refined and perfected them to produce spectacular works. Worn extensively, jewelry was not only ornamental but also served to indicate social status and even to protect the wearer from harm. Etruscan metalwork is notable for its use of granulation, a form of ornamentation in which tiny grains of metal (usually gold) are fused to an underlying surface metal. This handsome pin/pendant follows the finely laid granulation of an original Etruscan gold ornament in the collection of the Walters Art Museum.
