Our elegant ring recalls a beautiful ancient Greek ring (2nd– 1st century B.C.) in The Met collection. This large, flamboyant ring belongs to an unusual group of finger rings distinguished by the fact that they are hinged. The size of the bezel and the hinge mechanism suggest that the original was meant to be worn on the thumb.
The use of garnets is typical of the Hellenistic period, when it became fashionable to decorate gold ornaments with colorful exotic gemstones and pearls. This ancient ring is a striking example of the extravagant lifestyle of the rich of the Hellenistic world.
